What do I mean? How does this statement relate to sports and—more specifically—LIfe.
It means that the way we view the world and the events around us determines how we react and behave. Our experiences influence our behavior, our thoughts, our expectations and—ultimately—our outcomes.
We are just as likely to learn from our mistakes as we are to learn from our successes: both are not mutually exclusive; we use the lessons learned in each case to create the outcomes we desire.
So, what factors determine our successes and failures in life?
Now, we are delving into the world of psychology. Psychology was defined by an old text book I have as, “The Science of Mental Life”. I guess that definition is as good as any. If you look at some of the most successful athletes, business people, statesmen, civic leaders and our fellow citizens, I believe most of them would agree that they had a ‘vision’ of how they want their life to look like; they have specific goals in mind to achieve it; they believe in their ability to accomplish it, and they believe that their goals are worthwhile and intrinsically satisfying. And, they work very, very hard to achieve these aims. “What the mind can conceive and believe, the mind can achieve.” That is not my quote. Rather, it is a quote by Mr. Jim Rohn—a lecturer, entrepreneur and motivational speaker.
To be perfectly honest, it is easy for me to write about what I think defines a successful life, but your success is not my success; my definition of success is different than yours. Your goals are your goals. And your definition of success is your definition. This is good. The difficult part is implementing the plans to obtain your success. Life happens. Things get in the way. Our plans are disrupted for some reason. Some major event interrupts us. Or, we really do not believe our goals are achievable.
Our lives are made up of thousands of events, experiences and thoughts. If I believe the world is a nasty place—full of strife, competition—then I will react accordingly. Our views are important.
