Parents: Your childs skates need sharpening.

How do you know when your childs skates need sharpening. Well, if you notice them falling down a lot that is a good time to take them to your local skate sharpener: Snipers Skate Shop. Good sharp, clean and level edges will make the world of difference in your young athlete’s performance. Here are several more tips for you to consider:

  • look at the edges of your child’s skates. Can you see a reflective shine on the edges? When you gently run your finger down the skate blade, do they seem dull—do they have nicks in them?
  • Are your skates too sharp? Yes, they may have too deep a hollow down the center of the blade. Beginners—who do not have the skill to stop with both feet, will have difficulty stopping if the hollow is too deep. My shop recommends that first-time skaters use a 5/8ths hollow to begin with and—as they become more proficient in their stopping and playing, they may go to a deeper or—in some cases—a shallower hollow. Remember: other factors are involved in selecting the proper radius of hollow eg. ice temperature, weight of the player, player assignment, etc. Ask us for more information next time to drop by.
  • If your skate blades look like a banana, or if the back and front radius of the blades are ground down to the toes (something we don’t do), you will need to get them re-profiled. We use the Mark VI Custom Radius and have done many profiles.
